Artist Statement

As an artist my work addresses personal responsibility and cultural memory and involves investigating place, history and technology. In my research based practice I use public documents and site visits to question how history is presented and perceived.

The places and events I research are often controversial in nature and in turn are part of larger complicated histories. I do not stand outside these histories and instead recognize my complicity within them both on a personal and cultural level, often collapsing my personal experiences with the historical record.

The work physically addresses the question of memory and cultural idealization through the creation of souvenirs and the incorporation of toys. The ultimate goal is not to create a single discrete piece but a constellation of items that work in tandem. These collections exist somewhere between personal tourist groupings (post cards, snowglobes, etc) and that of a roadside museum.
